Karina Thompson - Textile Artist
What

Framed textiles and large scale wallpieces using stitch, slashing and heat bonding. The inherent qualities within the materials are an integral element to the ideas behind the work. Her intuitive use of colour and rapport with materials has been critically described as “so, so exciting” as well as “sensual and enigmatic.”

She has recently developed a new technique for applying gold and silver leaf onto stitched surfaces. These remarkable pieces bring a sense of opulence by reflecting light in contrast to the richly coloured and densely worked fabrics. Recent pieces using fake fur and leathers create vibrant textural layers that are both beautiful and surprisingly durable.
